In 2000, following a peace agreement between the Philippine government and the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), a faction of dissatisfied members broke away to establish the Abu Sayyaf Group. On March 20 of that year, Abu Sayyaf militants abducted Father Rhoel Gallardo along with several others in Basilan, marking one of their notorious acts.
